Tony Snape

Joined the Seashell Board in July 1993 and became Chairman in July 2008.

Tony is a Chartered Surveyor who formally ran his own building and civil engineering contracting company. Tony is on the Board of Great Places Housing Group, a Trustee of MOSI (the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester) and a mentor for the Prince's Trust.

Ed Baines

Joined the Seashell Board in July 2009

An experienced in-house lawyer/company secretary, specialising in the fields of engineering, construction, contracting, manufacturing and local government.  Ed has significant experience of management in the private and public sectors and is currently employed in the public sector with substantial involvement in Manchester’s Building Schools for the Future programme, working with consultants, external lawyers and framework contractors, and advising on a wide range of commercial contracts.

Nic Gower

Nic studied Chemistry at Manchester University before training as a Chartered Accountant.   He is a partner in  PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP working mainly from the Manchester office. He is also a member of the Institute of Experts.

Dr Afshan Khawaja
Trust Director and RSM Governor

Joined the Seashell Board in July 2009

Currently Consultant Psychiatrist: General Adult Psychiatry, North Manchester General Hospital. Responsible for inpatients admitted from central Manchester CMHTs, Dr Khawaja leads a multi-disciplinary team and takes a lead in all Mental Health Act issues and medication as well as care planning and other therapies. Dr Khawaja's other responsibilities include teaching junior doctors at foundation year level and those in specialist training about psychiatric issues. She is an ordinary council member for Manchester Medical Society, Psychiatry Section Committee and chairs and organises a regional group called the Young Consultants Forum, of which she is a founder member.

Alan Greatbatch

An Oxford law graduate, Alan qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Arthur Andersen and spent time in their offices in Manchester, Bermuda and Liverpool before becoming the first Head of Compliance at Midland Montagu.  Alan joined Bankers Trust in 1990 and was responsible for Compliance outside the US and Australia.  He subsequently moved to Deutsche Bank and became Global Head of Compliance for their Corporate and Investment Banking division.  Alan also filled a number of roles for Morgan Grenfell, including serving as the Chief Executive from 2002-03.  Alan was recruited by RBS in 2003 to be the Head of Regulatory Risk and Operational Risk for the Corporate Banking and Financial Markets Division from where he has recently retired.

Formerly  Strategic Director – Community, with Blackpool Borough Council (responsible for Children’s Services; Leisure, Culture and Adult Learning Services; Housing and Social Services )
Originally a teacher, David achieved a BSc Special Honours at the University of London, followed by a PGCE and M.Ed with Distinction at the University of Aberdeen.

David is a Registered Inspector with Ofsted for both Primary and Secondary education and was a CPA Peer Inspector with the Audit Commission.

Rev Dr Ros Hunt
Trust Director, RCM Governor and member of Safeguarding Board

Joined the Seashell Board in July 2009

Ros currently works at Manchester University as a researcher in the Social Research on Deafness Group and in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work as a Practice Learning Manager facilitating social work student learning whilst on placement. Her current area of research concerns the reorganisation of social care services and the place of deaf children within that. Previous research has focused on pre-school deaf children, informed choice for parents, and how social care services for deaf adults can be helped to achieve best practice. Ros is a qualified social worker with many years’ experience in both the statutory and voluntary sector. Before returning to Manchester 5 years ago, Ros managed a variety of social care teams in Cambridgeshire, including the Sensory Services Team and the Emergency Duty Team. She is committed to ensuring the appropriate provision of social care services both to deaf children and their families and to families of children with low-incidence disabilities.

David Shipley

A Chartered Accountant, David retired in 2001 from the accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers after 25 years as a partner in London and Manchester. During his career he had experience of a wide variety of businesses and responsibility for several of the firm’s major clients. He was also a member of the firm’s National Executive Committee for the accounting practice for several years.  Outside the firm while still a partner he was seconded for a period as Group Finance Director of Ferranti plc in the aftermath of that company’s major fraud. He was also Integrated Professor of Financial Management at Salford University.

Since retiring he has been an advisor and non-executive director for several listed and unlisted companies in the UK and SE Asia.

Gwen Carr

Director Gwen Carr

Joined the Seashell board in September 2007

She is currently the Deputy Director of the national NHS Newborn Hearing Screening and the Newborn and Infant Physical Examination Programmes, and an Hon. Senior Research Associate at the University College London Ear Institute.  Originally trained as a Teacher of the Deaf, her previous positions have included Head of Sensory Support Services for Stockport and UK Director of Services and Deputy CEO of the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS).  Gwen has also worked as a consultant to the Government’s Early Support programme for disabled children and families and continues to support the work of the NDCS in supporting families of newly diagnosed deaf children, including those with complex needs.  At Seashell, she is chair of the fundraising sub committee and is involved in the Trust’s olfaction research with PZ Cussons.

Dr Waqar Bhatti
Trust Director

Joined the Seashell Board in July 2009

Consultant in Musculoskeletal and Sports Radiology, University Hospital South Manchester.  This role involves managing and leading in musculoskeletal imaging and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).  Dr Bhatti is the radiology Trust lead for trauma and plays an active role in education and research at University level.  He lectures nationally and internationally.

Tim Exell

Trust Director, Chair of Governors for Royal School Manchester and Royal College Manchester and member of Finance Committee

Joined the Seashell Board in February 2005

Tim taught in a number of mainstream and Special schools and during his professional career was elected to the National Association of Head Teachers’ National Council where he chaired their Special Education Committee. In 1997 he was invited to join the Secretary of State’s National Advisory Group for Special Educational Needs. He also served on a plethora of other National Committees representing the Special Education sector.
