Information update regarding funding for Independent Specialist Colleges.

The YPLA has a budget to pay for specialist college places; this budget will rise slightly in 2011/12. It is important to be clear that the government has allocated funding for this purpose - there is definitely money available to pay for a place at a specialist college.

Our Mission is “To provide an adult learning environment supported with alternative and augmentative communication systems to prepare and involve students with complex learning needs in their transition to the next stage of their young adult life:”

The college is a wonderful place to learn and offers day and residential courses to students aged between 19 and 25 years with a broad range of communication difficulties including hearing impairment or limited or no oral language communication and severe/complex learning difficulties. The College at RSDCD is an independent specialist college with a North West regional and national role.

Specialist programmes and teaching support learners with dual sensory impairment and severe/ profound learning difficulties, learners whose primary need is autism and learners who are deaf or who have communication difficulties.

The college is recently refurbished and is designed to provide a positive learning environment. Specialist teaching facilities include a fully inclusive Ian Karten CTEC suite; accessible life skills room, dark room, sensory room, quiet place and individual work rooms. Each teaching base is designed to effectively support group and individual work stations. The acoustic and visual environment has been designed to be comfortable for learners who experience hypo/hypersensitivity to sound and vision.

There are specialist facilities on campus including sports hall with climbing wall, an inclusive fitness suite, swimming pool, hydrotherapy pool, horticulture workshop, gamelan and dance studio. Learners also make great use of the local community and we have minibuses to support off-site learning.
