25 September marks National Fitness Day, and we want to highlight the fantastic sports facilities at Seashell and the importance of fitness for disabled children and young adults.

Seashell’s fully-accessible fitness suite, accredited by the Inclusive Fitness Initiative, offers specialist equipment and staff trained to prescribe and deliver exercise programmes for people with disabilities.

The Bradbury Fitness Suite is our brand-new space in The Ged Mason Building fully equipped with fitness equipment, cardio and strength machines for exercise, rehabilitation and wellness. Our strength machines use air resistance instead of traditional weights to support with joint strain, and machines such as the MOTOmed support with blood flow, stretching and limb mobility.

“Every user has an assessment to create an individualised plan to support them to achieve their goals,” said Damien, Health and Fitness Development Officer.

“Some individuals benefit from using the space to support their emotional regulation – if someone is feeing heightened, they can use the gym to exercise their strength with weights or other fitness equipment.”

As well as emotional regulation, using the gym can also support users with conditions such as diabetes, as exercise can lower blood sugar and regulate insulin levels, which is beneficial for many students at Seashell.

We’re so proud of this fantastic facility that supports many community groups, children, adults and elderly users with their fitness, independence and overall mobility. Thank you to the Bradbury Foundation, Hong Kong and the Peter Harrison Foundation for funding this incredible space.

As well as the Bradbury Fitness Suite, we are proud to offer a range of sporting facilities including our accessible climbing wall, adapted cycle track, swimming and aquatic activities and 3G sports pitch.
