Wednesday 1 July was our annual Intercollege Sports Day with Natspec! We welcomed students from Bridge College and David Lewis to our 3G Sports Pitch for a day of inclusive sports activities and a 100m relay race.

This year we held the day at our 3G Sports Pitch and it was wonderful to see many cohorts of students join us for the inclusive activities who would not usually attend the event at Sport City. We’re fortunate that Seashell has a full range of accessible facilities, including hoists, changing rooms and disabled bathrooms to support a wide range of need and bring inclusive sports activities to everyone.

“We had a range of athletes from specialist colleges across the North West,” said Maureen, College Teacher. “We have competitors with sensory impairments, complex needs, Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities who can all take part in the adapted activities.”

In the morning, our pitch was full of incredible activities including hurdles, basketball, javelin, long jump, and cricket. Our fantastic group of volunteers and staff helped to keep score and ensure everything ran smoothly – thank you to our Active Team and all 31 volunteers from BNY, Cushman & Wakefield, and Pinsent Masons and JLL.

“This event is so important to support disabled young people with their health and wellbeing, sensory integration, trying new things, making friends and just being a part of something.”

In the afternoon we had the 100m relay race before ending with certificates for bronze, silver and gold.

“Everyone is scored on what they achieve with their team, so it’s not a tokenistic event,” said Maureen.

Seashell students Max, Sam and Laneyle helped to hand out certificates with Buddy the Bear. Congratulations to Y1 class in our Sensory Cohort for winning gold! We were so pleased to have Y1 join us for the activities on-site and access new opportunities for those who would not usually attend at Sport City.

“I liked running with Buddy the Bear,” said Max. “I did basketball and I won the javelin.”

“I did the running this afternoon, it was so great!” said Sam.

“It’s good. I like the running,” said Laneyle.

What an absolutely fantastic day! We are so proud of everybody for taking part and giving it their all. Until next year!

Thank you to Natspec and the Disability Sport Development Trust for supporting us to fund this event. The Disability Sport Development Trust has been giving grants to sports organisations and clubs for over 30 years. Its focus is on encouraging and supporting grass roots physical and recreational activities up to National level for people with either a sensory, physical or learning disability.

Thank you to MyProtein who provided 200 free water bottles to our staff and students!
