Earlier this month, we hosted a study weekend at our campus for students enrolled on our MQ MSI PGDip (Mandatory Qualification for Multi-Sensory Impairment Postgraduate Diploma), delivered with validation from Liverpool John Moores University.

This unique course, now in its second year, continues to attract passionate professionals committed to improving outcomes for children and young adults with Multi-Sensory Impairment (MSI).

The weekend was filled with practical sessions including life skills workshops and a demonstration of our state-of-the-art Audiology Suite. Both first and second year students had the chance to meet one another, explore our facilities and hear from guest speakers who shared their lived experience with MSI.

MSI is a low incidence condition, meaning that it occurs in low numbers/is less common, within the general population. Language in the education, health and care settings can vary, making understanding this population of learners challenging. In fact – this was one of the topics discussed during the weekend, alongside gaining a deeper understanding of MSI young people.

Caireen Sutherland, MQ MSI PGDip Course Leader said: “Deafblind (MSI) children and young adults require highly specialist teachers to maximise their potential to learn. This qualification provides our students with the specialist knowledge to ensure those learners have the best opportunities in preparation for adulthood.”

Laura, a first-year student on the course said: “The course has already had a huge impact on my practice. I feel more confident in identifying the needs of MSI learners and adapting my teaching to support them more effectively. The study weekend was a brilliant opportunity to connect with others and learn from experts in the field.”

As one of only two providers nationally delivering this Department for Education (DfE) contracted qualification, we are proud to be at the forefront of MSI education. Our course is co-produced and delivered by leading experts in the field, and includes residential days, teacher placements, and practical assessments tailored to real-world practice.

We are now welcoming expressions of interest for our third cohort, starting in September 2026. If you’re a professional working with MSI children and young adults and want to deepen your expertise through a course that blends academic learning with hands-on experience, we’d love to hear from you.
