Shiona works as a Credit Control Officer at CDL, a software company based in Stockport. Her two sons, James (11) and Rory (15), attend Royal School Manchester. Shiona explains the impact that Seashell has made on her two sons, and the ways she gives back through her employer.
For the second year running, CDL have chosen Seashell to be their charity of the year. The team have fundraised for us with challenges like the Oggie 8, and volunteered their time with everything from gardening and maintenance to sports days. Shiona has worked for CDL for two years since returning to work after seven years raising her sons.
Shiona explains that Rory, who has more complex special needs, has been at Seashell since he was eight, while James moved to Royal School Manchester a couple of years ago from a previous school.
“The difference at Seashell is amazing.”
“It’s very individual, rather than class-based, with one-to-one learning. He previously wasn’t progressing very well, and he has come on in leaps and bounds since being there. There are lots of opportunities and space to grow – there are gardens, a swimming pool and a bike track. Most importantly, he’s very happy there.”
Meanwhile, Rory also has one-to-one help with learning and benefits greatly from sensory activities, including trampolining, which helps with emotional regulation.
“They’re also very big on teaching life skills, and both he and James are very independent at school,” she adds.
It’s not just support for James and Rory, but for Shiona herself that is invaluable.
“They offer resources and in-person guidance on broaching difficult areas, including sleep issues and preparing for adulthood. I think it would be a struggle without them.”
When asked about how CDL helps the Seashell, Shiona’s appreciation is clear.
“Apart from fundraising through activities such as taking part in the Manchester Run, they volunteer to help at events, such as sports clubs. Without them, they wouldn’t be able to run as many. Last year they donated Christmas trees and brought a smile to everyone’s faces. The two organisations work really well together.”
Rory will turn 16 in September and move on to Royal College Manchester, where the students will be moving in to the new Ged Mason Building which features classrooms tailored to individual college pathways, a new sports hall, gym, and sensory rooms.
“We’re very lucky to have Seashell nearby. It must be one of the best providers in the UK.”
Thank you so much to CDL for their ongoing support and organising this conversation with Shiona. We look forward to working together over the next year!
