Did you know disabled children are four times more likely to feel lonely than non-disabled children? The summer holidays are particularly isolating time for many children with disabilities. Without attending school and college they can spend the whole holiday isolated from the outside work, instead of creating memories, making new friends and trying new experiences.
81% of families with disabled children would like a holiday club for their disabled child during the six-week break. But for most parents there isn’t any suitable provision for them. This has a negative impact on the entire family, with parents often not being able to work, having a year-round impact on the type of job they can have.
But school holidays shouldn’t mean disabled children are isolated. Seashell runs an inclusive community sports and activities programme during the holidays. Unlike other holiday clubs, we offer 1:1 support, which means children with disabilities can get involved in new activities in a safe and supported way. Help decrease isolation this holiday.
Charlotte, who has Cerebral Palsy, attends our holiday club. When she first, she didn’t want to join in with the activities as she lacked confidence which caused her to isolate from those around her. The team of specialists at Seashell’s holiday club supported her and created a safe space to get involved. Doing the sports and wellbeing activities with other children was transformative. It gave her the confidence and self-esteem to make friends and do activities that she wouldn’t have dreamed about doing in the past.
