Life is a little different at Seashell during the month of August as our school and college close for the summer break and although there are less students around, our ever-changing site is home to a hive of activity.
Students who call Seashell their home have been enjoying spending time both on and off site, with trips to see family, lots of park visits, farmyard adventures, and crazy golf to name just a few! The sun has shone down on Sir Norman Stoller Way, and residents have been able to make the most of it in both their individual gardens and communal spaces.
It has also been time to say ‘Au Revoir’ to 9 young people as they leave Seashell for pastures new – each leaver received a memory book, to remind them of all their achievements over the years. While this is an emotional time for students and staff, it is also an exciting one, as individuals continue to progress and grow in their lives beyond Seashell. One family even kindly donated a tree to Seashell as a parting gift, which has been planted in the grounds.
Our Summer CADS programme has been a great success and has seen more children and young people from the community join us for a variety of fun filled activities. The Active team, CADS Crew and a host of individual and corporate volunteers have worked together to create a fantastic series of events from sensory walks and cycling/scooting on our newly opened Learn to Ride track and trails, music and performance sessions with Triple C, arts and crafts, swimming and mini Olympics on our 3G pitch.
Seashell has also been delighted to play host to a Manchester United Foundation summer camp, that allowed young people of all abilities and ages to participate in activities.
“We offered a full timetable of inclusive events, including climbing (using a new harness which was funded by sponsorship I received for the Three Peaks expedition) rebound therapy, football, and fitness. We also offered participants, their siblings, and their families an opportunity to use the cycle track, sports pitch, and family room. We received some really positive feedback from participants and their families; we’ll certainly be running the event in the future!” – MU Foundation SEND Officer, Sarah Jones
The event was attended by a mix of Seashell residents, and students from Brentwood Academy, Chatsworth Multi Academy Trust, Inscape House, Kingfisher Primary and Pioneer House.
After a busy summer, we are excited to see our day students back on site in a couple of weeks’ time. As well as many familiar faces, we will be welcoming 8 new students in Royal School Manchester and 22 students in Royal College Manchester!
