Teaching isn’t a straightforward, black and white process. There are different approaches to take with students because not all pupils require the same support and attention. Here at Seashell, we are proud to provide inclusive teaching and learning at our specialist residential school and special needs college, so let’s find out how and why we do it.
What is inclusive education?
So what is inclusive education? Inclusive teaching means teaching in a way that:
- Respects the diversity of students
- Enables all students to take part in learning and reach their full potential
- Ensures different students’ learning needs are met, regardless of their background, abilities or learning style
- Removes barriers that prevents a student from learning.
Inclusive teaching is when general education teachers and special education needs (SEN) teachers work collaboratively in the classroom. This allows students to feel integrated with their fellow classmates, leading to an overall improvement in their education.
This type of teaching provides students with the support they need to continue learning in a general education classroom.
Inclusive teaching also means not discriminating against students because of their age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, race, religion or pregnancy.
What are the benefits of inclusive classrooms?
There are many benefits to providing inclusive teaching and learning in the classroom. First of all, it provides a tailored approach to teaching, with SEN teachers and general education teachers weaving in and out of sessions to provide students with specially-designed education.
A key strategy to providing this tailored approach to education is by breaking students off into smaller groups. This gives the teacher the chance to provide a much more specialised type of teaching for a specific group of students, making them better able to work to their needs.
In many traditional learning environments, students are taken out of their classroom for specialised sessions in speech therapy, reading and more. This detaches the student from their fellow classmates and does not promote inclusive learning. By keeping all of the students together with a tailored teaching approach, everyone feels a part of the group, providing inclusivity.
When made to feel more comfortable, this is when students can benefit greatly from their education, as they’re willing to learn more and be included in group sessions.
