Charity is an essential aspect of society that plays a significant role in making the world a better place. It involves giving and sharing resources, time, skills, and other forms of support to people who are in need. Anyone can get involved in charity work, from individuals to large multinational companies and even small local businesses.

Charity can take various forms, including donations, volunteering, fundraising, and community service. In this article, we’ll explore why charity is important, the work of Seashell, and the benefits that it provides for both employees and the children and young people we support.

What does Seashell do?

Seashell is a national learning disability charity that supports children and young adults who have complex learning difficulties, additional communication needs, and disabilities across the UK. We provide care, support and education for children and young people aged from 2 to 25 years.

We provide this support in a range of settings:

As part of the residential care and support we provide, we also have a team of specialist staff that helps our residents with the complex needs they have.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the roles at Seashell.

The roles at Seashell

Here are some of the roles at Seashell that are funded as part of our charity. Each of which makes a huge difference to the children and young people we support.

  • Therapists
  • Residential support workers
  • Physiotherapists
  • Audiologists
  • SEN school teachers
  • Healthcare assistants
  • Volunteers.

All of these staff members and many more have the expertise required to provide specific and comprehensive residential care for every child that needs us. This is just one of the many reasons that charity work is important.

Our staff are highly skilled and experienced in caring for children and young people with disabilities. We employ a multidisciplinary team of teachers, therapists, support staff, and medical professionals who work together to provide a holistic approach to care and education.

It’s rewarding for both employees and the children

Another great example of the importance of charity work is the development of new state-of-the-art buildings, such as the Moulding Foundation Building. Our campus in Cheadle Hulme is home to Royal School Manchester, Royal College Manchester and 17 residential home away from homes. The Moulding Foundation Building, home of RSM and other facilities, is proving enriching for the children and employees.

Thanks to the generous donations from Seashell supporters and their interest in Project Transformation (which aimed to develop a brand new school, college and campus), we’ve been able to expand the facilities we provide to our current students, residents and also those in the future.

As of February 2023, The Moulding Foundation Building is the new home for Seashell Royal School Manchester and offers some of the best facilities available. The facilities have been carefully designed with the special and complex needs of our students in mind. These include a swimming pool, hydrotherapy facilities, and dining halls that can be shared with students from the Royal College Manchester to improve social relationships.

Our charity work is also geared up towards other big plans for facilities, such as a wider cycle trail that goes around the entire Seashell campus. The plans also encompass a new college, reception and sports and administration centre. While some of these facilities have already been created, a lot more fundraising and charity work is needed to find the money needed to achieve the rest of our goals.

Our charity work benefits staff too

Not only does the development of the new campus, houses, and education settings improve the support and care our students and residents receive, but it also improves work environments for our hard-working staff. This ensures they have all the resources and equipment needed to improve the lives of those they are working with. Additionally, as part of Project Transformation, a dedicated hub will be available for staff to use to support their professional development and improve their workplace well-being.

Charity work is so important because it often bridges the gap between the government-supported schemes and initiatives that are needed by those who are most vulnerable in society and the level of support they require. Here at Seashell, our aim is to help children and young adults who have complex needs, and their families, to live their best lives.
